This Day and Age is a musical group based out of a suburb of Buffalo, NY. Despite the harsh winters this area experiences, it’s an interesting and vibrant location. Let’s discuss some of the history and interesting facts from Buffalo, NY.

Buffalo is the second most populous city in New York State (after NYC). It is located on the western edge of the state on the eastern shores of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River.

It is the county seat of Erie County and it’s the principal city in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metro area. The area happens to be the largest in upstate New York.

Buffalo began around 1789 as a small trading outpost near the Buffalo Creek. Following the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825, Buffalo grew quickly as the canal’s western terminus. The city continued to grow such that it became the 8th largest city in America in 1900.

The city then went on to become a major railroad hub as well as one of the largest grain milling centers in the US. As the 20th century began to draw to a close, the fortunes of Buffalo saw a large reversal as shipping became rerouted due to the St Lawrence Seaway and steel mills and other heavy industry moved to places like China.

The city saw its population retreat such that its 1990 population was the same as in 1900. However in recent there has been a bit of a renaissance in the area with many new businesses developing and prospering there.

Some of the region’s largest economic sectors are in health care and education, both of which continue to thrive despite our lagging economy. The retail sector also does well in Buffalo thanks in large part to Canadian shoppers who want to take advantage of lower prices.

Buffalo remains a strong economic area thanks in part to a low unemployment of 9.2%. And recently Forbes magazine named Buffalo as the 10th best place to raise a family in America.

Housing is very affordable in Buffalo and has experienced much less of the speculative nosedive in other areas. Most areas in Buffalo are well maintained, safe and attractive. The area also boasts terrific features.

The schools in greater Buffalo are outstanding and supported very strongly by the State and local communities. The area also has some outstanding universities and medical facilities.

The downtown area also has some terrific restaurants and shops. There is plenty to see and do in Buffalo. If you love major league sports, Buffalo has the famous Bills football team. Or how about hockey, basketball or baseball? Terrific teams are here for the sports fans large and small.

One of the key drawbacks to Buffalo is the weather. It is located on a snowbelt and the winters can be pretty brutal. But people who live in the area get used to fighting the snow pretty quickly and the localities clear the roads usually very quickly so you’re not stuck for long. Just dress warm and you’ll get used to it.

But even in winter there is plenty to do like skating, skiing, and other winter sports. Spring and summer brings more fun outdoor activities and fall is especially beautiful and festive in the area. So come up to Buffalo and experience all that this vibrant and famous area has to offer.
